New windward pier changes the face of the port of Hersonissos

The Municipality is moving forward with an emblematic intervention that is expected to radically upgrade the port of Hersonissos, with the construction of a modern and multifunctional windward pier. The project, with a total budget of over 1 million euros (before discounts), is financed entirely by the “Philodemos II” program and is of strategic importance for local development and maritime tourism.

The contract for the preparation of the construction study will be signed on Monday, September 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at the Municipal Office of the Port of Hersonissos. The study includes the construction of a new windward pier, the expansion of the land area by approximately 10,000 square meters, the renovation of existing facilities, as well as the restoration of the ancient Roman pier.

After its completion, the port will have:

Significantly increased berthing spaces.

Enhanced protection from southeasterly winds.

Deeper quay walls for larger vessels.

Modern infrastructure for users and passengers.

At the same time, the modernization will bring new dynamics to the area, attracting pleasure boats and tourist boats, strengthening the local economy and creating new jobs.

“With this completed project, the port of the Municipality of Hersonissos acquires the modern character that the wider region deserves,” said Mayor Zacharias Doxastakis, emphasizing that the goal is to make the port “a pole of attraction for maritime activity and a point of reference for Crete.”

The project is combined with the upcoming redevelopment of the land port zone, which is to be auctioned immediately, marking an overall upgrade of the coastal identity of Hersonissos and offering multiple benefits to both the Municipality and the Region of Crete.
