The Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Enterprise of Selinos took an important step towards energy autonomy and sustainable development, completing and putting into operation the first two D.E.Y.A. photovoltaic parks in Crete, with a total capacity of 470 kWp. The facilities are located at the location “Aspros Poros” in Sklavopoula, in the Municipal Unit of Pelekanos, in the restored former Uncontrolled Waste Disposal Site (X.ADA), transforming an area of environmental problem into a pillar of green energy.
The project included the supply, installation and interconnection of the photovoltaic stations with the Medium Voltage network of the Public Electricity Company of Greece, utilizing cutting-edge technology with double-sided photovoltaic panels and lightweight aluminum bases, fully compatible with the restoration works of the site.
The Pelekanos Solar Power Plant operated from 1995 to 2017 and was restored in 2022 with funding from the Region of Crete. This was followed by the preparation of studies for the installation of the photovoltaics, while the construction was implemented with co-financing from the Regional Development Program of the Region of Crete and the state program “Antonis Tritsis”, through the Deposits and Loans Fund. The contractor of the project was “T&T Technical Energy”.
The investment covers to a significant extent the energy consumption of the pumping stations and facilities of the Selino Public Works Authority, offering:
energy shielding of the company,
reduction of the environmental footprint,
enhancing economic sustainability.
The utilization of a recently restored CHADA for the production of electricity from RES is characterized as a pioneering practice, not only for Crete but also for the entire country, constituting a model of sound environmental policy.
With this move, the Selino Public Works Authority sends a clear message that municipal enterprises can play a leading role in the energy transition, contributing to sustainable development and the protection of the natural environment.
