Ryanair: Maximum hand luggage size increases

Ryanair is increasing the maximum hand luggage size for all passengers across Europe. Now, each passenger can carry one hand luggage item free of charge measuring 40 x 30 x 20 cm, compared to 40 x 25 x 20 cm previously.

According to the company, the new size is 33% larger than the maximum free hand luggage size allowed under European standards, which set 40 x 30 x 15 cm. However, Ryanair emphasizes that the hand luggage must fit under the seat in front. Passengers who wish to take additional hand luggage with them can add the Priority Boarding service.

This move by Ryanair comes in the context of the wider discussion that has opened for uniform hand luggage regulations in Europe. The European Parliament is proposing that in future all travellers should be entitled to carry one small piece of hand luggage and one personal item free of charge. Ryanair’s decision can be seen as an adaptation to these requirements.

At the same time, the company is planning to tighten checks on hand luggage. Ground staff will receive higher bonuses when they detect overweight or oversized hand luggage, ensuring that the rules are strictly adhered to.
