Lufthansa plans to cut thousands of jobs

The Lufthansa group is planning significant cuts in its management staff, according to information from the financial newspaper Handelsblatt, which cites sources from within the company. The news was first leaked by the Reuters agency.

During an internal briefing on Friday, CEO Carsten Spohr reportedly announced the need to reduce administrative costs by 20%. This could lead to the elimination of up to 20% of the approximately 15,000 jobs in the group’s management.

Officially, Lufthansa has not yet commented on the information. Final announcements are expected on Monday, as part of the “Capital Markets Day”, while the exact number of cuts has not yet been determined. The group employs a total of almost 103,000 people.

The cuts come at a time when the airline giant is facing high operating costs, while capacity and productivity remain below pre-pandemic 2019 levels. In fact, Lufthansa Airlines recorded losses of hundreds of millions of euros in the first half of 2025.

The company is already implementing the “Turnaround” program, which includes more than 700 measures to reduce costs and increase revenue, in an effort to return to profitability.
