While Italy raised its security alert level to 2, the highest possible in the absence of a direct attack on the country, following the attacks in Paris, some of Italy’s most popular tourists sites were named by the State Department on Thursday as “potential targets” for terrorist attacks, ftnnews.com reports.
Italy is looking for five terror suspects after a tip-off from the FBI about possible jihadist attacks on landmark sites.
Locations at risk
Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said Rai 3 TV, “Since yesterday afternoon, our security forces have been working to find five people. he minister of the interior has explained many times that we are at a very high level of alert covering symbolic sites, places where people gather, from stadiums to cathedrals, and St Peter’s in particular, which were, among others, the places highlighted by the FBI yesterday”.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Rome identified the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Basilica, the Duomo and La Scala theater in Milan, and other tourist attractions such as churches, synagogues, restaurants, theaters and hotels as locations possibly at-risk.
