Security and migration put the European project to the test, Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos said on Saturday in a speech on migration at New Democracy’s 10th regular conference.
According to the Commissioner, both issues are a priority for the EU noting that pressure is particularly high for Greece and Italy. “Cooperation was difficult because unfortunately xenophobic and poplar tendencies started being cultivated in Europe. However, the EU’s plan has started to unfold,” he said, adding that what Europe is going through these days is a crash test.
“It’s time for member-states to show solidarity among them but also solidarity towards those people,” he said, noting that Europe is always the final destination. He also said the term “political asylum” is clear and criticized Greece for not creating in time the relevant support mechanisms.
Avramopoulos also stressed the need for a wider cooperation to block the road to populism, nationalism and xenophobia. “New Democracy is a mound against these tendencies,” he said, noting he stands by the side of Mitsotakis not just as a Commissioner but also as “one of you”.
