The crisis in Cyprus talks caused by an informal meeting between UN SG and T/C leader Mustafa Akinci in the sidelines of a dinner President Erdogan has hosted for the participants of the UN World Humanitarian Summit has been defused following Mr Ban’s explanations to President Anastasiades. But the talks are not expected to resume until June 15.
President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades said on Friday evening that he hoped similar incidents, like the one at the Istanbul Summit, earlier this week, will never be repeated by anybody who is involved at the Cyprus process.
Asked whether the crisis has now been defused, the President said “yes, I think that after the statement by the UN Secretary General, certain attempts that were made are now rectified and I hope that…no similar phenomena are going to be repeated by anyone who is involved in the process”.
The President made the statements before attending a cultural event, in Nicosia.
Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades had on Friday a telephone conversation with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Their conversation took place in the wake of the events that took place in Istanbul earlier this week, on the sidelines of the UN World Humanitarian Summit, which Anastasiades attended.
The UN’s policy on Cyprus has not changed, the international organization`s Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, during a telephone conversation they had on Friday, expressing at the same time his full confidence in the role played by his Special Adviser on Cyprus.
A readout issued by the UN, in Nagoya, Japan, with regard to the Secretary General`s phone call with the President of Cyprus, said that “with reference to recent events in Istanbul, the Secretary-General reiterated that the UN’s policy on Cyprus has not changed. The Republic of Cyprus is the Member State of the UN. “It added that “the bi-communal dialogue that takes place under UN auspices aims at reaching a settlement of the Cyprus issue based on relevant UN Security Council resolutions.”
“The Secretary-General expressed his full confidence in the role played by his Special Adviser, Mr. Espen Barth Eide, promoting that goal, underlining that he has the support not only of himself but also that of the Security Council, the European Union and the wider international community,” the readout noted.
Moreover, it added that “the Secretary-General encourages the two leaders to intensify their efforts towards reunifying Cyprus, in a climate of mutual respect, in order to bring an end to the unacceptable status quo, in the interest of all Cypriots.”
