Largest sponge in the world found in Hawaii

The world’s largest sponge has been discovered 2km off the coast of Hawaii. The organism, which has the size of a mini-van, is considered by marine biologists as one the oldest living organisms on the planet.

The huge sponge was found in the area of Papahanaumokuakea, which is listed as UN world heritage site due to its biodiversity. According the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which discovered the sponge, it is 3.6 meters long, 2.1 meters high and 1.5 meters wide.
