Amendments put forward by the Cypriot delegation at the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) were voted by the majority of its members and were incorporated in the CoR’s opinion on the European Comission’s annual report about EU enlargement and Turkey.
Head of the Cypriot delegation, Nicosia Deputy Mayor Eleni Loucaidou, submitted three amendments, which were signed by all the other members of the delegation and members of three CoR political groups.
According to a press release issued by the delegation, the amendments were voted by the majority of participants, during the 118th CoR plenary session, held in Brussels on June 15-16.
The amendments of the Cypriot delegation, incorporated in the CoR opinion, said that the Committee hopes that Turkey will actively support efforts by the UN to reach a just, comprehensive and lasting settlement of the Cyprus problem, and called on Turkey to begin withdrawing its troops from Cyprus and proceed with actions, aiming at the transfer of the fenced-off town of Famagusta to the UN, according to a UN Security Council relevant resolution, as this could serve as a confidence building measure and provide an opportunity for peace and for the economic, social and regional development of both communities.
Moreover, according to the amendments put forward by Loucaidou, the CoR encourages, supports and asks for a just, comprehensive and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, on the basis of the EU values, welcomes the positive steps and the engagement to find a mutually acceptable solution, calling on Turkey to actively support efforts to this end. Furthermore, the CoR requests the full implementation of the road map for visa liberation towards all EU member states.
