As the strange and uncertain atmosphere of a failed military coup continues to evolve in Turkey, tension on the island of Cyprus has been flying high, according to greekreporter.com.
Greek-Cypriots were undoubtedly holding their breath as the coup attempt paralyzed control of the military and for several hours the 43,000 Turkish troops stationed in the northern Turkish occupied sector of Cyprus were without leadership.
In Brussels on Monday, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said that Cyprus was under considerable stress because of the attempted coup while he was speaking at the EU proceedings of foreign ministers of the 28-member states.
The 43,000 Turkish armed forces stationed in northern Cyprus “were without a government and without the leadership of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces for hours,” he said.
Kasoulides also commented that the failed coup might lead to more coup attempts from the Turkish armed forces which could very well cause further destabilization in the region and directly affect the Cyprus problem.
Kasoulides, along with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias are pushing for the withdrawal of all troops in the final solution of the Cyprus problem, and the latest events have addressed this concern as Greek-Cypriot forces such as the National Guard and the police had to be “mobilized immediately” in the moments immediately following the first news of the attempted coup in Turkey.
