Cyprus’ Foreign Ministry has started moving on its action plan in dealing with the new Turkish warnings regarding the third licensing round in the island’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
On Tuesday the Ministry reported that they would be sending a letter to the United Nations (UN) Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, on the matter.
The Ministry has mentioned that it will also be sending the letter to all the permanent members of the UN Security Council, where they will highlight the situation on Turkey’s fresh threats regarding exploration in block 6 of the EEZ.
In the case that the issue ‘heats up’ and there is a violation of Cyprus’ sovereignty in its EEZ, Nicosia has said that they will ask for the European Union (EU) to get involved.
In an announcement on Wednesday, the Foreign Ministry said that Cyprus is exercising all its sovereign rights in its EEZ as all countries in the international community.
Regarding the statements of the Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Tanju Bilgic, Cyprus has said that his comments were a repeat of unacceptable positions and legally unfounded positions.
The statement further adds that Cyprus is ready to protect its sovereign rights, and use all the methods that it has under international law.
