US Vice President Joe Biden has expressed his hope that the community leaders in Cyprus can note significant progress in Cyprus problem discussions, before their trip to the UN General Assembly in New York, reports said on Saturday.
Biden held phone conversations with President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci on Friday evening, in regards to the Cyprus problem.
In a statement from the White House spokesperson, Biden is said “to have spoken on the phone with the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and then Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.
The Vice President congratulated the leaders on the progress that has been made in negotiations to reach a settlement that will reunify Cyprus as a bizonal, bicommunal federation.”
Biden, the statement concluded, also expressed his hope that the leaders will be in a position to note significant progress in discussions before their trip to New York for the UN General Assembly and that an agreement can be reached before the end of 2016.
Sources in the US told CNA that his phone conversation with Akinci was held after speaking with President Anastasiades. The same sources said that Biden asked Anastasiades, if he could speak with Akinci.
Biden, the sources said, will also bring up the Cyprus problem during his meetings with Turkish officials in Ankara.
