Cypriot Teachers' Union call for warning strike on Wednesday

Cyprus’ POED Teachers’ Union will be going on a warning strike on Wednesday September 21 at 12:00 pm, an announcement said on Thursday.

The announcement added that the decision was made on Thursday after a meeting of the Union’s executive board.

During the strike, POED announced, district offices around Cyprus will hold meetings to inform their members.

The Organisation has said that their decision to take intensified measures was influenced by the slow and insufficient staffing at schools, which is affecting their work.

These are problems that continue to exist three weeks after the beginning of the school year,” the announcement said.

POED’s announcement added: “They [the governing board] believes the Cabinet’s decision is unacceptable as per the actual staffing needs that the Ministry of Education has recognised.”

The Union has said that the issue with the decision is that it replacements should be filled by a yearly contract, so as to not damage the public school system.

POED has announced that they will release an analytical announcement on Friday, and that on Tuesday they will be holding a press conference at 10:00 am.

The Teacher’s Union has said that they will send a brief to all parents and other organisations to inform them, and request meetings.

Education Minister Costas Kadis has told Simerini newspaper that he is disappointed in the union’s actions.
