A man wearing a private security company uniform stabbed eight people at a Minnesota mall before an off-duty police officer shot him dead, reported CNN.
Seven of the wounded were treated and released, while one victim remains hospitalised.
None of their injuries are life-threatening, stated St. Cloud Police Chief, William B. Anderson.
Witnesses said the man entered Crossroads Mall on Saturday night, made a reference to Allah [Arabic word for God] and asked at least one person if they were Muslims before he attacked, police said in a statement.
The stabbings occurred in multiple locations inside the mall, including in the common area and several stores.
The mall had security teams on site but they are not armed.
Shortly after, an officer confronted the attacker.
“The individual we believe to be responsible for the victim’s stab wounds is currently deceased inside the mall,” police announced on Sunday morning.
OFFICER INJURED AT CALGARY MALL
In a separate incident, a police officer was severely injured after a struggle with a man at a Calgary shopping mall on Saturday, reported the Toronto Star.
Calgary police stated that a suspect attacked the officer with a “large bladed weapon” after police received reports of a fight at a nearby light rapid transit station.
A suspect fled before police arrived but an officer spotted the man hiding behind a dumpster.
The suspect initially ran into the Marlborough shopping mall in the city’s northeast, but turned to confront the officer with the weapon.
The officer first used his Taser, but it was ineffective so he discharged his service firearm, police announced.
A police news release was unclear as to whether the suspect was wounded by a bullet only saying he was taken to hospital and was in a stable condition.
The officer suffered severe injuries but is in stable condition, police revealed.
OTHER ATTACKS
The Minnesota stabbing was one of several other incidents reported in the US on Saturday.
In New York City, an explosion ripped through Chelsea, leaving dozens injured. A second device with wiring was found blocks away, authorities announced on Sunday.
In neighbouring New Jersey, an explosion went off in a garbage can on the route of a Marine Corps charity run. Thousands of people were about to participate in the 5K race in Seaside Park. No injuries were reported.
