President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades continues on Friday his contacts in New York with the Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America and the diaspora.
According to an official announcement, he will also receive the “Light Unto the Nations” prize of the American Jewish Committee, during a special ceremony this morning in New York.
Subsequently, the President of the Republic will meet with Archbishop Demetrios of America.
Later in the evening he is expected to address the annual dinner of the Federation of Cypriot Organisations in America.
On Thursday, President Nicos Anastasiades, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, met with the US Vice President Joe Biden in New York. The focus of the meeting was the course of the UN-backed talks for a solution to the Cyprus problem.
The security aspect
Speaking to the press following the meeting, which lasted an hour, Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides said that they discussed the security aspect of the Cyprus negotiations and the need for Cyprus, in the post solution era, to continue to play a role in terms of security in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
They also discussed, the Spokesman said, the need for certain procedures – that were followed in the past, in terms of the negotiation course – to be avoided.
During the meeting, President Anastasiades and the US Vice President also discussed bilateral issues, focusing on energy matters.
Biden, expressed his readiness to assist the Cyprus solution process until the very last day he will be in office, so that we achieve the goal of terminating the occupation and reuniting our country, the Spokesman said.
