Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon are scheduled to hold their much anticipated meeting at the UN General Assembly at 5:45pm (Cyprus) on Sunday.
According to SigmaLive Greek sources, a new round of intensified talks for October will be announced after the meeting, however, no new trilateral meeting with the UN is expected to be confirmed.
SigmaLive also learnt that, after the meeting, Ban will issue a short statement to the press alongside the two leaders, and after that a more detailed joint press release will then be issued to the press.
CNA English, referencing diplomatic sources, reported that Ban will open the meeting with some introductory remarks followed by remarks by Anastasiades and Akinci. After hearing the two leaders Ban will then make his final remarks.
SigmaLive Greek reported that Ban will emphasise his determination for a solution to be reached this year, and will also make reference to the significant progress achieved thus far, and also comment on the differences that remain between the two communities.
After the press conference, Anastasiades will reportedly head to the Cyprus Ambassador to the UN Nicos Emiliou’s New York residence where he will hold a press conference, reported SigmaLive Greek.
On Saturday, Anastasiades held a meeting with UN Special Advisor on Cyprus Espen Barthe Eide and UN Special Representative on Cyprus Elizabeth Spehar.
Akinci held talks with Ban as both leaders prepared for today’s meeting.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and illegally occupied the island’s northern third. Repeated peace talks have so far failed to reach a negotiated agreement to reunite the country.
