The last day to register to vote in Cyprus municipal elections is Monday, Radio Proto was told ahead of the elections planned for December 18.
The head of the elections service, Demetris Demetriou said that today is the last day new voter applications can be filed and that tomorrow no new applications can be accepted or changes made to the voter lists.
He mentioned that in the upcoming municipal elections Cypriot citizens and citizens of other EU countries who are permanent residents in Cyprus and above the age of 18 have the right to vote.
Application forms, Demetriou said, can be found at the municipal offices, the citizen’s service centres, the electoral service, or from the Interior Ministry’s webpage (www.moi.gov.cy).
Demetriou has said that a bleak picture is emerging to date, as young voters have expressed their indifference to and contempt of politics and the politicians. He added that of the 33,000 eligible new voters, approximately 2,500 have actually registered to vote.
Radio Proto was also told that of the permanent resident voters (approximately 12,500) only 2,800 have registered.
Demetriou mentioned that the Electoral Service is preparing for municipal elections.
The head of the parliamentary committee of the interior, Eleni Mavrou, has said that as of now the municipal elections will continue as planned, despite the fact that they have been tied to developments in the Cyprus problem and reforms in the local governance.
