Former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres is poised to become the next UN Secretary-General, reported AP.
Euronews further reported that none of the five UN Security Council veto-powers voted against him.
He is set to replace current UNSG Ban Ki-Moon.
According to a tweet from Guterres: “An agreement has been reached. UN Security Council members to elect me as new UN Secretary General. I’m honored and happy.”
UN Special Advisor on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide, also took to Twitter to express his reaction to Guterres’ pending appointment:
“An excellent choice: Antonio #Guterres is proposed as new #UN Secretary-General by the Security Council. Good news for a troubled world.”
