Baris Burcu, the so-called ‘Presidential Spokesperson’ for the occupying regime, has hit out at Archbishop Chrysostomos II for his comments on the island’s presidency should a solution to the Cyprus problem be reached.
On Sunday, Chrysostomos said that “Turkish Cypriots that constitute an 18 per cent minority cannot hold the island’s presidency, when Greek Cypriots have an 82 per cent majority.”
Burcu responded to Turkish Cypriot media on Monday, stating that a solution will be based on political equality between the two communities.
He added that any solution “that does not include the political equality of the Turkish Cypriots is unacceptable” and a “solution that Chrysostomos thinks will never exist.”
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and illegally occupied its northern third.
UN-led peace talks are currently underway, between the Republic’s President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, to find a negotiated settlement that will reunify the country under a federal roof.
