President Nicos Anastasiades has said that in these turbulent times the cooperation between Ireland and Cyprus is of vital importance.
He was addressing an event at the Dublin Mansion House, on Wednesday, where he was received by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Brendan Carr.
President Anastasiades signed the visitors’ book expressing his thanks to Carr and the municipal council and the citizens of Dublin for their warm hospitality.
Addressing an event he noted that “the Irish and Cypriot people went through parallel struggles in order to gain their independence.”
They share, he added, “common principles and values and face the same contemporary challenges.”
“Our cooperation in today’s turbulent times is of a vital importance,” he stressed.
President Anastasiades referred to the ongoing effort to reunite Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of 1974 and subsequent occupation of its northern third.
“In Cyprus, we are in the process of ongoing negotiations in an effort to solve the long standing Cyprus problem. A viable and functional solution to the Cyprus problem, in line with the European Union acquis, values and principles; a solution that would maintain Cyprus’ independent foreign policy; a solution that will safeguard the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all Cypriots,” he said.
He further extended, “Our sincere appreciation for all those Irish men and women who served through the years at the UN peace keeping force in Cyprus and to mark the presence of a number of Irish veterans who honour us here today.”
President Anastasiades was accompanied by his spouse Andri and the Cypriot delegation.
