Limassol Police discovered anti-tank weapons, including a rocket-propelled grenade, on Tuesday night, with SigmaLive Greek reporting that they are “likely from Russia”.
The police are conducting investigations as to how the weapons came into Cyprus and for what purpose they were planning on being used.
Police came across the weapons at around 10pm in the Germasogeia district, sending demining experts to the scene to safely move the weapons, which were in a “useable condition,” according to Limassol Police’s Criminal Office boss, Ioannis Sotiriadis.
The nearby area was evacuated during the anti-tank weapons’ removal, which were subsequently sent off for further examinations to confirm their origin.
SigmaLive Greek reported that the weapons seem to have “no link” to the Republic’s National Guard.
Police are hoping to determine if any individual or group was responsible for bringing the unauthorised weapons into Cypriot territory.
GRENADE THROWN
In a separate case, a 38-year-old was arrested on Tuesday in connection with a military grenade throwing incident last April.
Lakatamia Police made the arrest, with a judicial warrant, in order to facilitate their investigations.
The grenade did not explode.
