President Anastasiades hints that Cyprus solution could be months away

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades referred to a “true critical juncture for the Cyprus Problem,” saying that “it looks like many decisive convergences have been achieved.”

The President made the statement on Tuesday night at an exhibition opening on occupied Kythrea antiquities and treasures.

On the “decisive convergences,” Anastasiades added that they “allow us to say that we can, under conditions, hope for an overall proposal for a settlement in the next few months.”

The President further stated that he is not certain if developments “will proceed the way everyone hopes,” adding that “this does not depend on our commitment but on the determination and the implementation of a rhetoric that wants Turkey to pursue a solution.”

Anastasiades commented that Turkey’s cooperation “will become evident at the forthcoming meeting on the territorial issue which will take place in a European country, possibly Switzerland.”

“TERRITORIAL ADJUSTMENTS”

The President went on to assure the audience at the exhibition opening that “on the territorial issue we have outlined the fundamental criteria that will be used to define the territorial adjustments.”

Anastasiades remarked that these “territorial adjustments should be in line with the property issue.

He added: “During these times our thoughts are not limited or geared towards specific areas. What we want is to ensure the return or the right to return. This is one of the important convergences we have achieved.”

HUMILIATION FOR EUROPE

The President stated that his government “will not fail to knock on the door of anyone, especially to the UN Security Council permanent members, to persuade our lawful right that no guarantees, or the right of intervention, is justified in a modern European country.”

Anastasiades said that “it will be inconceivable and a humiliation for Europe itself, and for every European, if a European state requires the guarantee of a third country and not that of Europe.

The President commented that his government has submitted proposals that will make both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots “feel equally safe.”

Anastasiades concluded by saying he hope’s “Turkey will respond to our goodwill and intention, and to realise that a solution to the Cyprus Problem is for the benefit of both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, [it’s] relations with Greece, Europe and the region.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and illegally occupied its northern third. UN-led peace talks resumed in May 2015 aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof.
