A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck near Christchurch, New Zealand, US experts announced on Sunday.
Other reports are putting the quake at a 6.6 magnitude.
New Zealand Civil Defence announced: “We are assessing situation with assistance of scientific advisers and civil defence groups,” adding that there was no tsunami threat following the quake.
According to reports the quake was centered 46km from Amberley town which has around 2,000 inhabitants, and 70km from Kaiapoi town with 10,000 residents.
