A Cypriot firefighting aircraft has continued its efforts to extinguish wildfires in Israel, Cyprus’ Civil Defence Spokesperson Olivia Michaelidou told CNA English on Friday.
Michaelidou announced that the Republic “responded immediately” to a request from Israel for help, “under the coordination of the Civil Defence department and after contacts with the Police, Fire Service, Forestry Department and Foreign Affairs Ministry.”
The Spokesperson noted that the Civil Defence Department had been “in constant contact” with the Israeli authorities, expressing Cyprus’ “readiness to offer assistance.”
Michaelidou added that on Thursday a Forestry Department firefighting Air Tractor aircraft was sent to Israel.
Cyprus Government Spokesperson Nikos Christdoulides initially broke the news on Twitter.
Michaelidou recalled that similar aircraft were sent from Israel to Cyprus to help extinguish wildfires engulfing the island’s Solea region during the summer, at the Republic’s request.
The Spokesperson noted that “reciprocal help and cooperation between the Republic and Israel [will] continue as a result of the excellent relations between the two countries’ competent authorities.”
