Euro hits 20-month low against $US after Italian referendum but recovers

The Euro currency hit its lowest point since March 2015, after the fist exit polls in the Italian referendum were announced. Immediately after the ballot boxes closed at 12 am (Greek time) and the first exit polls broadcast on Italian TV showed the No vote was leading with over 54% the Euro dropped to a 20-month low against the US dollar at 1.0506.

The Tokyo index was down on its opening session, while the Yen also rose against the Euro, while the Nikkei index also fell by 78 points on news of the Italian referendum result.

Later, the dollar fell against major currencies Monday, dragged down by a rallying euro and stronger emerging markets.
