Merkel visits Christmas attack site and promises harsh punishment of culprit

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Foreign Affairs minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Minister of Interior Thomas de Maiziere visited Monday’s attack site at noon today and left one white flower in memory of the victims. The German Chancellor was dressed in black and couldn’t hide her sorrow.

Many people have visited the site where the attacker claimed the lives of 12 people and injured 48, and they have made an unofficial monument of flowers and candles.

Earlier, German Chancellor Angela Merkel pledged to punish the perpetrators of the terrorist truck attack in Berlin, which led to the death of 12 civilians and the injury of 48 other, during a televised address to the German public, Tuesday. “Millions of people wonder how we can live with what happened in the Christmas market? A murderer killed so many people in such a happy place? I cannot find an answer to that question”, she said. She added that it would be difficult for the German public to accept the prospect that the perpetrator had sought asylum in Germany as a migrant, she stressed. The German Chancellor said she would visit the site of the tragedy within the day, stressing she had confidence in the investigations underway by the German police. “We want to live free”, she concluded in her address.

In the meantime, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Tuesday spoke with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the telephone and offered the sincere condolences of the Greek people for the families of the victims and the German people after Monday night’s deadly attack in Berlin, a press release from the premier’s office said.
