8.8-Magnitude Earthquake | Tsunami Threat for Japan, Hawaii, and U.S. West Coast

One of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded, with a magnitude of 8.8, struck off the eastern coast of Russia early Tuesday morning (local time), triggering tsunami warnings across several Pacific nations and prompting a global emergency response by authorities and citizens.

The quake occurred at a depth of 12 miles (around 19 km) off the Kamchatka Peninsula in Siberian Russia. The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center immediately activated emergency protocols.

Evacuations in Japan, U.S., and Pacific Islands
Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued a warning for tsunami waves up to 3 meters (10 feet) along its Pacific coast, from Hokkaido to Wakayama. A 1.3-meter wave has already been recorded in Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan, and other areas have begun evacuating towns and villages.

Nearly 2 million Japanese residents have received evacuation orders, with authorities warning of possible additional waves.

Hawaii is on full tsunami alert, with officials urging residents to leave coastal areas and move to higher ground. The mayor of Honolulu made a stark appeal: “Take this very seriously. Move as high as you can.”

Meanwhile, on the U.S. West Coast—including California, Oregon, and Washington—the National Weather Service (NWS) has advised the public to stay away from beaches, marinas, and harbors.

Global Travel Warnings Issued
The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) issued travel advisories for numerous countries, including the U.S., New Zealand, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, and several Pacific island nations like Samoa, Solomon Islands, and Tonga.

Canada, China, Taiwan, and the Philippines were later added to the list.

“If you are in an area affected by the earthquake or tsunami, follow the guidance of local authorities,” the FCDO said in a statement. For travelers in Japan, the advisory directs them to NHK’s English-language site for real-time updates.

Worldwide Concern and Readiness
The White House posted the following message on X (formerly Twitter):
“Due to the powerful earthquake in the Pacific Ocean, a tsunami warning is in effect for Hawaii, with monitoring in Alaska and along the U.S. West Coast. Japan is also in the tsunami’s projected path.”

The situation remains fluid, as seismic waves and underwater disturbances could affect regions with delays. Scientists are monitoring aftershocks and assessing the impact on ocean water movement.

Authorities worldwide are on high alert, and ships in Pacific ports have been ordered to remain offshore until conditions stabilize.
