Crete is Europe’s third top destination for 2026 according to Cond? Nast Traveller

Crete is among the top three European destinations for 2026, according to the new list of the internationally renowned travel magazine Cond? Nast Traveller, which presents the ten destinations with the greatest potential in Europe every year.

This recognition takes on particular significance, as it coincides with the proclamation of Crete as European Region of Gastronomy 2026, a title that captures the island’s unique relationship with its land, culture and food. As the magazine’s article points out, “Crete is evolving into an international center of gastronomy, wellness and quality hospitality, with deep roots in the Minoan tradition and the Mediterranean diet, considered the healthiest in the world.”

Cond? Nast Traveller makes special mention of the new hotel arrivals that enhance the island’s profile, such as Ikos Kissamos in Chania and Rosewood Elounda, which are expected to set new standards of luxury and authenticity. At the same time, the upcoming opening of the new international airport in Kastelli is highlighted, which will significantly upgrade the arrival and departure experience in Crete, enhancing its accessibility and competitiveness.

Crete’s presence on the list is also accompanied by the inclusion of the Peloponnese, which the magazine describes as a “cinematic destination” that combines history, nature and modern aesthetics. It even mentions the filming of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey in Messinia, as well as the sustainability actions of Costa Navarino, where luxury coexists with the environment. Equally important is the reference to the new network of 1,730 kilometers of hiking trails that will unite the mountainous and coastal parts of the Peloponnese by 2026, forming a unified narrative of culture, adventure and wellness.

At this point, it should be emphasized that the double Greek presence in the Cond? Nast Traveler top ten reflects the country’s strategic evolution into a destination for experiences, not just holidays. Moreover, this year’s report reinforces the international image of Greece as a country that combines authenticity, sustainability and high aesthetics of hospitality.

The top ten European destinations for 2026 according to Cond? Nast Traveller are:

  • Seville, Spain – new gastronomic scene and luxury hotel arrivals
  • Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, France – green revolution in the Alps with sustainable trains and ecotourism
  • Crete, Greece – authentic lifestyle, Mediterranean diet and European Region of Gastronomy 2026
  • Milan, Italy – at the heart of the 2026 Winter Olympics
  • Upper Carniola (Gorenjska), Slovenia – lakes, art and new forms of wellness
  • Isley, Scotland – the paradise of whisky

  • Frankfurt, Germany – World Design Capital 2026
  • Brussels, Belgium – creative renaissance with the new Pompidou Centre Kanal

It is worth noting that the annual Cond? Nast Traveller list is considered one of the most influential in global tourism, influencing promotion strategies, tourism policies and travel choices of millions of visitors. This year’s recognition confirms that Greece, guided by its gastronomy, cultural identity and commitment to sustainability, remains firmly among the top players on the European tourism scene.
