The messages for the tourist traffic in the Sitia region in the upcoming season are optimistic, as reported to the Mayor of Sitia, Mr. George Zervakis, by the CEO of the Sitia Development Organization, Mr. Costas Vassilakis, and the President of the Sitia Hotel Association, Mr. Yannis Kakourakis (photo), who represented the Municipality at the ITB Berlin Exhibition.
According to the data of the Hotel Association:
- The tourist season begins with a new flight to Sitia Airport from Poland, which will last from May 18 to October 20.
- The new flight, in combination with the existing one from Denmark, which begins on May 15 and ends on October 20, will give a significant tourist boost to the wider region. It concerns flights with closed contracts with hotel units in the area.
Mr. Vasilakis, at the meeting, underlined the strong card of Sitia in negotiations with interested airlines, which is the recent positive evaluation, with certification by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, of Sitia Airport. This certification, as he said, is decisive for the opening of new collaborations.
Registration of accommodations in Sitia
Mr. Vasilakis addressed an open call to all accommodation owners in the area to contribute to a broad registration of existing accommodations in order to create a bed availability database through the Sitia Development Organization as an additional element to be used for future collaborations with Tour Operators.
Mr. Vassilakis noted that a very good and constructive collaboration has begun with the Hellenic Tourism Organization, expanding the way in which the possibility of strengthening the flight work of Sitia Airport for the 2026 season will be given.
Support for investments for new beds in Sitia
Mr. Zervakis referred to the effort made by all those involved to strengthen the tourism product and establish Sitia as a destination. “Many efforts have been made in this direction with participation in exhibitions, with contacts with Tour Operators and airlines. With the prospect of a radical change in its appearance, the city will have all the conditions to be an attractive and hospitable place, capable of conquering the repeat visitor”.
The Mayor of Sitia also referred to the perennial issue of the lack of beds, which, as he said, can only be resolved by attracting investors. For this reason, the Municipal Authority is oriented towards supporting and encouraging new investments with a view to the tourist, economic, and social development of the region.
