Greek wines that acquired “wine passport” in Florence – Marinos Skolarikos at T.N for Greek Wine Day 2025

With a strong message of extroversion and culture, this year’s Greek Wine Day 2025 in Florence confirmed the growing international impact of Greek wine in Italy. The event, which was held under the auspices of the Honorary Consulate of Greece in Florence and the Municipality of Thira, brought together more than 350 industry professionals, including sommeliers, journalists and representatives from leading wineries.

In his statements to Tornos News, international wine judge Marinos Skolarikos noted that this year’s event had a double symbolism: the promotion of the Greek vineyard and its connection to the global wine scene. “Greek Wine Day is now a fixed point of reference for Greek wine in Italy,” he emphasized, adding that “a table dedicated to the World Xinomavro Day aimed to highlight this unique variety that expresses the earthly identity and passion of Greek producers.”

The event stood out for the joint presentation table of Vinsanto Santorini and Vin Santo Chianti Classico, an initiative that aroused enthusiasm among those present and highlighted the bridges between the Greek and Italian wine traditions. Mr. Skolarikos told Tornos News: “For the first time, we are presenting a joint table with Vin Santo Chianti Classico DOC and Vinsanto Santorini DOC. This is a unique experience for the two Vin Santo PDOs, but also for Florence, the city where Santorini wine was first mentioned in the 15th century.”

In total, 54 wineries participated in the event, with 49 of them presenting their wines, while eight Santorini wineries coexisted at the common table of the two Vinsantos. The interest of Italian professionals was particularly intense, confirming the growing appeal of Greek wines in the neighboring market.

This year’s event, which hosted important personalities such as the first Italian Master of Wine Gabriele Gorelli and the Vice President of the Tuscany Region Stefania Saccardi, was a celebration of Greek taste and culture. The new logo of Greek Wine Day – Culture, Taste, Passion – captured the spirit of the event, connecting wine tradition with the creativity and taste identity of the country.

This year’s event confirmed that Greece has now established its place on the international wine map, combining tradition and innovation. Mr. Skolarikos points out that “Greek wine is in a phase of maturation, ready to stand on an equal footing with the great European schools. The connection of wine with culture and tourism can be a driving force for development for the country.”

Greek Wine Day 2025 proved that Greek winemaking is no longer limited to local distinctions, but aims for a stable presence in foreign markets, with Santorini, Naoussa and the emerging areas of the Epirus vineyard at the forefront. With such initiatives, Greece is solidifying its reputation as a country with “culture, taste and passion”, the three elements that sum up the soul of Greek wine.
