Old hotel buildings in Mallorca will be given over to be converted into social housing.
This is according to a verbal agreement between the Mallorca Hoteliers’ Federation and the Civil Society Forum. The agreement is expected to be signed by the end of January.
According to local media, a so-called obsolescence index is to be developed that will provide the framework for determining which facilities will be included in a group of buildings that could be converted into social housing for rent.
Javier Vich, president of the Mallorca Hoteliers’ Federation, said there is a good understanding between the two parties.
Hoteliers say that in many cases it is “very clear” which facilities could be included. The forum’s spokesman, Jaume Garau, stresses that the most important thing is that initiatives of this type “are starting to take shape.” Following this development, the forum is willing to rejoin the sustainability pact, from which it withdrew a few weeks ago.
Regarding the fight against illegal short-term holiday rentals, both parties agree that cracking down on this illegality will alleviate housing problems and relieve Mallorca of the tourist crowds.
In addition to hoteliers, the forum is in talks with the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), TUI, and leading hotel groups such as Riu.
