Hotel Experience Returns – The Hotel as a Living Space of Relationships, Emotions, and Knowledge

Hotel Experience returns for the second consecutive year, this time at the Technopolis of the City of Athens on the weekend of October 18 & 19, 2025. With content curated by Archisearch, artistic direction and experience design by Flux-Office, and creative direction & production management by Vassilis Bartzokas of Design Ambassador, this year’s event is inspired by the architectural identity of the venue, incorporating its industrial character into the overall design.

The multidimensional aspects of hotels unfold in a cinematic landscape where the imaginary meets the real.

With the hotel always playing a central role in the narrative, atmospheres from iconic films — The Shining (1980), In the Mood for Love (2000), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), Death in Venice (1971), Some Like It Hot (1959), Casablanca (1942) — set off a visual and emotional journey in a setting full of charm, mystery, and carefree delight.

The exhibition booths transform into hotel rooms, while other areas recreate key elements of hospitality such as the Entrance, Reception, Lobby, and Elevator, reinforcing the theatrical character of the space.

The hotel’s interior spaces are upgraded, while the exterior areas are reimagined with new elements such as Entrance, Pool, Flags, Beach, Phone Booth, and Train Platform, creating a complete hospitality experience. The overall design blends industrial features with cinematic references.

Key trends in hospitality design shaping this year’s Hotel Experience conference:
Cultural context and uniqueness return. Identity is drawn from heritage, craftsmanship, and collective memory, with adaptive reuse of buildings, local stones and techniques, and original new works that speak the language of place. Hospitality becomes a “cultural interlocutor” through art, collaborations with communities, and storytelling that embraces local history.

Wellness becomes a guiding principle. From medical hybrids to “social wellness,” design touches circadian lighting, air quality, acoustics, and ergonomics. Gastronomy takes on a therapeutic role with production gardens, education, and an emphasis on provenance. Longer stays demand rhythms and spaces adapted to work, movement, and rest.

Co-working, socialization, and multi-generational travel reshape layouts. “Work From Hotel” zones, multi-use lobbies, and livable meeting spaces allow smooth transitions throughout the day. Interconnected suites, cluster courtyards, and programs for all ages are supported by thoughtful acoustics, lighting, and materials.

Sustainability and biophilia are now non-negotiable. With buildings responsible for a major share of global emissions, hospitality must be designed with environmental reciprocity: from site and materials to energy systems and visitor experience. New development models show the way: bioclimatic fa?ades reducing cooling loads, minimal-impact ground construction, 100% renewable energy, water collection and recycling infrastructure, prefabrication, and “outside-in” architecture with fresh air, natural light, and sustainable materials.

Technology is discreetly integrated. Rooms remember preferences, intuitive interfaces and calm aesthetics reduce friction. Lobbies become social zones without traditional counters, while spaces turn multifunctional with movable partitions, flexible lighting, and teleconferencing infrastructure. Luxury is now measured in foresight and effortless flow.

New leisure destinations and mature metropolises invest in iconic architecture and sustainable infrastructure, often within national strategies. Small-scale lodges with social and environmental impact coexist with major urban landmarks. The message is clear: confidence in demand and in design’s role as a strategic differentiator. Architecture is both the campaign and the content of the experience.
