Strong bookings and new records from the German market in 2025

Bookings in the German travel market for Greece in 2025 are developing with great momentum, with the first data emerging from the international tourism exhibition ITB in Berlin showing another successful tourist season.

The Secretary General of the Hellenic National Tourism Organization, Mr. Andreas Fiorentinos, speaking to Tornos News, said that, according to the data so far, reservations from Germany for our country in 2025 already exceed 4.9 million, approaching the historical record of 5.4 million German visitors recorded in Greece in the whole of last year. Receipts from the German market in 2024 amounted to 3.7 billion euros.

“Greece is a mature destination, a safe country that suits the temperament of the Germans very well. We believe that we will have another very good season as well as the tourism stakeholders, with whom we are talking and have very good understanding and cooperation, are optimistic”, underlined the Secretary General of the Greek National Tourism Organization.

New destinations and new markets in the spotlight

Mr. Fiorentinos referred to the efforts being made in Greek tourism so that visitors to the country can experience other destinations beyond the iconic ones. In this context, as he said, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, knowing that tourism does not come automatically, has committed resources from the Recovery and Resilience Fund for the modernization of public infrastructure, such as port projects (e.g. Santorini) and road network (e.g. Patras – Pyrgos), so that more destinations in the country become tourism friendly and the country’s tourism product is strengthened overall.

These efforts are also focused on approaching new markets, as “there are always markets and travel audiences that we want to reach and we are investing in them,” as he pointed out. He expressed his optimism that there will soon be a direct connection between Athens and Mumbai, boosting prospects from the emerging market of India, which is, among other things, in the sights for the coming years.

“The difficult times are over for Santorini, we will recover.”

Regarding the recent seismic activity in Santorini, which has gone into recession, Mr. Fiorentinos underlined: “There is a freeze in reservations without essentially any cancellations, because the cancellation policy is flexible enough to allow them at the last minute. After all, Santorini is a very strong brand in tourism, and we have a lot of time ahead of us to recover.”

Regarding the images of empty streets in Santorini, he stressed, “All of us who live in the Cyclades know that there is essentially no tourist traffic in February. The shots of empty and dark streets are the situation that prevails in winter on the islands anyway and were not due to seismic activity.”

He also thanked all stakeholders and opinion makers abroad, “who handled the issue professionally and calmly,” and emphasized that, as scientists also report, the difficult times are over.
