A drop in revenue from German bookings for both winter and summer travel was recorded in February compared to last year. This is according to the latest data from Travel Data + Analytics (TDA) for bookings by all available means.
What is interesting for Greece is that our country, together with Turkey, Egypt, and the Eastern Mediterranean in general, account for 46% of bookings for medium-haul travel for the upcoming summer holidays for Germans.
What the data shows:
- Bookings for the winter season, which is coming to an end, recorded a decrease of 11%
- Bookings for the summer season are down 9%.
Despite the general decline, total sales for the winter season still exceeded the final figures for the previous season by 1%. This means that the season will remain profitable, even if bookings and trips in the last two months are below last year’s levels.
Summer bookings are down, but sales coverage is up
The summer season saw a four-percentage-point drop compared to the previous month. However, according to TDA, this development was expected, as bookings were already at high levels from the previous year. Despite the slowdown, total summer sales recorded an increase of 8%, with coverage reaching 52% of last year’s total sales (compared to 43% the previous month).
Popular destinations and changes in bookings
The medium-haul destinations in the Eastern Mediterranean, as mentioned above, remain the most popular among German travelers. 46% of bookings are to countries such as Turkey, Greece and Egypt. Meanwhile, 25% of travellers choose Western Europe, with destinations such as the Balearic and Canary Islands, Italy, Portugal and mainland Spain.
TDA’s analysis shows that the number of travellers choosing package holidays or holidays remains almost unchanged compared to the previous year, with an increase of just 1%. However, bookings for the following winter or later periods increased, representing 12% of monthly sales in February, compared to 7% the previous month.
- TDA’s assessment is based on bookings made through physical travel agencies, online travel agencies (OTAs), and travel portals, with a focus on package holidays.
