Austrians are excellent tourists: They travel and spend a lot…

The average annual per capita expenditure of Austrians on holidays reaches 2,326 euros, with holidays being the top category of consumer spending.

This is the result of a survey conducted by Marketmind on behalf of the Austrian Banking Association and the Bawag Group among 1,000 Austrians.

At the generational level, Millennials (born between 1981 and 1995) have the highest holiday spending (2,494 euros), and Baby Boomers (1946-1965) have the lowest (2,106 euros).

The Gen X generation (1966-1980) spends, on average, 2,407 euros on travel, while Gen Z (1996-2010) spends 2,126 euros.

The most popular holiday category is beach-focused 44%, followed by city breaks (28%) and wellness holidays (29%).

The first choice for younger ages is family holidays, city breaks, and long-distance trips. Millennials make similar choices, preferring long-distance destinations, “sun and sea” holidays, and family trips. Gen X choose beach holidays or mountain tourism, and Baby Boomers tend to travel for city breaks and wellness-focused holidays.

Men spend, on average, 2,505 euros and women 2,150 euros.

A survey by the Austrian Hoteliers’ Association (?HV) conducted by Reppublika (1,000 respondents) found that 78% of Austrians travel at least once this summer, 11% remain undecided, and another 11% have no plans for a summer vacation. Just over half are planning at least one overnight stay domestically, and six out of 10 will travel abroad.
