British Travel to Europe: What Changes in October for Passports

Travelers from the United Kingdom planning to visit European countries are advised to check their passport validity immediately, as new entry rules for the Schengen Area will come into effect from October 12, 2025.

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) issued official travel advice on Wednesday for 29 countries, including France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain.

This update concerns upcoming changes to entry requirements for the Schengen Zone, which will apply to all countries within this free movement area.

New Passport Validity Requirements
According to the FCDO, British passports used for travel to Europe must meet two key conditions:

Date of Issue: The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before the date of arrival in the Schengen country.

This means that if a passport was renewed before October 1, 2018, it might exceed the 10-year limit, even if the expiry date has not yet passed.

Date of Expiry: The passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned date of departure from the Schengen Zone.

It doesn’t have to expire within 10 years of issuance, but the 3-month buffer after leaving is required.

Advisory and Prevention
The UK government urges citizens to consult with their travel agents or airlines to ensure that all travel documents are valid and meet the new requirements.

As the FCDO warns:

“You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or attempt to travel with a passport that has been reported lost, stolen, or is damaged.”

These changes are tied to the full enforcement of Schengen Zone regulations, from which the UK is now excluded following Brexit. As a result, travel to EU countries no longer has the same ease as before for British nationals.

Impact on Tourism
This advisory is expected to affect tourist flows to European destinations — especially popular ones like Greece, Spain, and Italy, which receive millions of UK visitors annually.

Tourism professionals are encouraged to stay alert and keep clients informed about the changes to help avoid issues at airports and border checks.
