On July 30, ITA Airways approved its new Business Plan for the period 2026–2030, aiming to transform the airline into a leading, innovative carrier with a focus on sustainability, global connectivity, and deeper collaboration with the Lufthansa Group.
The plan is built around three strategic pillars: strengthening the airline’s competitive position, expanding its network and fleet, and further integration with the Lufthansa Group.
ITA Airways: Italy’s National Carrier with a Global Role
At the core of ITA Airways’ strategy is its establishment as Italy’s leading airline, committed to offering high-quality services for both leisure and business travelers. The company seeks to be a driving force for Italian tourism and international trade, while maintaining a strong commitment to economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
Stronger and Broader Network
The new plan places particular emphasis on expanding transatlantic routes, launching new flights from Rome Fiumicino Airport to key destinations in North and South America, Asia, and Africa. These new connections aim to attract more foreign tourists to Italy and strengthen the country’s commercial and cultural ties worldwide.
Additionally, ITA plans to expand its European and Mediterranean network through commercial partnerships and codeshare agreements to offer faster and more efficient connections. The network development strategy will remain flexible, adjusting to evolving geopolitical, regulatory, and economic conditions.
Next-Generation Fleet with Sustainability in Focus
Fleet renewal is a major part of the plan, with a new long-haul aircraft to be added each year starting in 2026. The goal is to have an entirely next-generation fleet by 2030—highly energy-efficient and with significantly reduced CO? emissions, in line with EU regulations and the principles of green transition.
Deepening Cooperation with the Lufthansa Group
Integration with the Lufthansa Group, the world’s fourth-largest airline group, is crucial for ITA Airways’ future. The plan calls for full ITA membership in Star Alliance by early 2026, along with participation in joint ventures with Lufthansa for the Europe–North America and Europe–Japan markets.
These synergies are expected to enhance competitiveness, open new markets, and provide upgraded services through shared loyalty programs (Volare and Miles&More), cargo operations, and customer service platforms.
Human Capital: Investing in the Future
Starting in 2026, ITA Airways will launch a personnel training and development program tailored to the expanding fleet and route network. At the same time, the airline will implement initiatives to strengthen its corporate culture, aiming to retain talent and boost competitiveness.

Sandro Pappalardo, Chairman of ITA Airways, stated:
“I express my deepest gratitude to everyone involved in developing the Business Plan approved today. We are laying the foundation for ITA Airways to establish itself as Italy’s primary airline, playing a strategic role in the national economy and the country’s global connectivity.”
Joerg Eberhart, CEO and General Director, added:
