Epirus at the Forefront of Development | Conference of the Epirus Diaspora

Epirus came into the international spotlight through the 6th Regular Conference of the World Council of Epirotes Abroad, held in Ioannina from July 25 to 27, 2025. The event, held under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Konstantinos Tasoulas, was co-organized by the Region of Epirus and showcased the region’s potential as a pillar of innovation, outward-looking initiatives, and sustainable development.

With the participation of numerous expatriate Epirotes from around the world — along with representatives from the government, local authorities, the church, the academic and business sectors — the conference served as a meeting point for exchanging ideas about the region’s future. Key topics included innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, tourism, and their interconnection with global trends.

Focus on the Role of the Diaspora

Particular emphasis was placed on the role of the Epirote diaspora, which remains active and connected to its place of origin. It is seen as a key cultural link and a development driver through partnerships, investments, and international networks.

Sustainable Development and Tourism in Focus

The sessions highlighted the need for a development model that leverages the comparative advantages of Epirus — its natural environment, cultural heritage, and human capital. Discussions focused on the sustainable use of natural resources, the support of youth entrepreneurship, and the importance of investing in research and technology.

Tourism was a central theme, with an emphasis on linking it to local production and cultural routes in order to create an authentic and sustainable tourism product. Epirus was identified as having strong potential for alternative tourism forms — including agritourism, cultural tourism, and hiking tourism — with the possibility of extending the tourist season.

The New Generation of Epirotes at the Forefront

A significant part of the dialogue was devoted to engaging young Epirotes from the diaspora, through initiatives that promote their involvement in the region’s development. Best practices, startup initiatives, and examples of modern professionals who draw on their Epirote identity as a foundation for creative ventures were presented.

The second day of the conference focused on statutory procedures of the World Council, including a report on the previous term and the adoption of strategic proposals for the next three years. The new strategic framework focuses on maintaining ties between expatriates and Epirus, promoting local culture, and strengthening business connections.

Acknowledgments and a Message of Unity

The World Council of Epirotes Abroad expressed its gratitude to sponsors for their support in successfully organizing the conference, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in promoting Epirus both nationally and internationally.

In their remarks, organizers stressed that the conference is not merely a ceremonial gathering but a strategic tool for planning and envisioning the future of Epirus, with the diaspora playing an active role.

The dominant message was clear: Epirus can and should become a key player in the Greece of tomorrow — by leveraging its diaspora, knowledge, innovation, and culture. The 6th Conference set the stage, confirming that reconnecting with one’s roots can be a springboard for progress.
