North Macedonia: Airport passenger traffic increases in the first half of the year

Passenger traffic at North Macedonia’s airports increased by 5% in the first half of the year compared to the same period last year, according to data from the country’s State Statistical Service.

In particular, Skopje International Airport and Ohrid Airport recorded 1.5 million passengers in the first half of 2025. During the same period, the number of flights increased by 3%, with the country’s airports recording a total of 12,235 flights from January to June.

The semi-annual statistics also show that the most frequent destination from Skopje International Airport is Istanbul (both IGA and Sabiha Gokcen airports with a market share of 17.1%), followed by Basel (6.6%), Frankfurt (5.7%), Zurich (5%) and Munich-Memmingen (4.6%), Dortmund (4.5%) and Vienna (3.9%). The top five countries with the most direct flights are Germany (market share of 26.5% in total passenger traffic), Turkey (22.6%), Switzerland (11.6%), Italy (5.4%) and Sweden (4.2%).

Moreover, during the period January – May, North Macedonia’s exports increased by 3.2% compared to the same period in 2024 and amounted to a total of approximately 3.36 billion euros, according to data from the State Statistical Service of the neighboring country. The value of imported goods during the same period was 4.71 billion euros, i.e. 1% increased compared to the same period last year.

In the said period, according to the total volume of foreign trade, the most important trading partners of the Republic of North Macedonia were Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Serbia and China, which constitute 47% of the total volume of transactions. EU Member States represent 60.7% of the value of North Macedonia’s total trade.
