Tourist flow in Milan on the rise, boosted by American tourists

This development is part of a general dynamic of recovery and strengthening of the tourist flow to the city, which in April had already recorded over 800,000 arrivals, while in total for 2024 arrivals exceeded 9 million.

In particular, the majority of tourists come from the USA, with a significant presence also from France, Germany and the United Kingdom. This influx confirms Milan’s role as one of the leading European tourist destinations, capable of combining cultural heritage, gastronomic tradition and innovative urban identity.

The responsible Tourism Advisor, Ms. Martina Riva, underlined the importance of tourism development not only for strengthening the local economy, but also as a lever for improving public infrastructure and services. In this context, the revision of the tourist tax, which is currently at 5 euros per night, is being examined, with the aim of aligning it with other metropolitan areas such as Rome and Venice. This adjustment is estimated to yield up to 20 million euros per year, which can be allocated to social and cultural projects (education, sports, culture).

It is noted that 80% of overnight stays in luxury hotels concern foreign visitors, which suggests that any increase in the tax will not significantly burden the local population, but can strengthen the financial sustainability of municipal actions.

At the same time, there is growing interest in tourism formats that combine culture, gastronomy, sustainability and locality. Milan is now being presented as a city that not only “welcomes”, but also invites to an authentic experience through its neighborhoods, traditions and people.

Milan’s continuous tourist growth, combined with strategic investments in culture, sustainability and public infrastructure, makes the city a consistently attractive destination for both individual travelers and business synergies.
