An innovative thematic vacation program, addressed to Canadian miners in Ontario, is scheduled to be presented by the Municipality of Aristotelis Halkidiki to representatives of mining organizations and professional associations in Toronto, on Thursday, December 4 – the day of celebration of Saint Barbara, patron saint of mining.
The program mainly includes leisure vacations in Eastern Halkidiki during periods of low traffic, which are enriched by guided tours to inactive mining structures and to places of cultural, wine and gastronomic interest.
The proposal to Canadian miners, which is part of the Municipality’s cultural-tourism program entitled Mademochoria Project, is the first collaboration between the Municipality of Aristotelis and the Canadian mining community, as a member of the National Network of Cities with Mining History, in which it presents the mining history of Eastern Halkidiki from the time of the Macedonian Kings and Alexander the Great to the present day.
The Municipality of Aristotelis, which is working on a plan to create a geopark across its entire geographical area, is promoting its mining heritage in a targeted manner, transforming mining history into a modern form of tourism – following the example of hundreds of cities or regions worldwide, which (around mining facilities and deposits) create alternative forms of tourism, culture and environmental awareness.
The presentation of the Municipality, which will take place at the Consulate General of Greece in Toronto, is a historical retrospective. It connects the centuries with each other, through a review of the “events” of the Hellenistic, Byzantine, post-Byzantine and modern eras in the famous Mademohoria, which during the Ottoman years maintained privileges thanks to the wealth of the subsoil. It brings Canadians into contact with the authentic history of Macedonia and approaches a huge tourist market around a thematic axis very close to the Canadian mentality. It will be attended, among others, by representatives of the press and tourist agencies of Ontario.
mines & bonus is putting together a 7-day vacation program in Eastern Halkidiki, which was designed by the Municipality of Aristotle in collaboration with Mentor Travel and the Aristotle Partnership. It is being distributed in Canada at preferential prices for members of mining associations, who will attend the presentation either in person or online.
