Greek Energy Minister: TAP construction to start on May 17

The ceremony to mark the start of construction of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline, will be held in Thessaloniki on May 17.

The statement came from the Energy and Environment Minister of Greece Panos Skourletis.

The ceremony of beginning of construction of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline will be held May 17 in Thessaloniki with the participation of well-known politicians inasmuch this is an important project that will create a lot of jobs,” the minister said during a press conference.

Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) which extends 882 kilometers and has an initial capacity of 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year, is expected to receive Azerbaijani “blue fuel” from the field “Shah Deniz” after Trans Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) at the border of Greece and Turkey.

TAP to cross Greece, Albania, the Adriatic Sea and in the south of Italy to enter the Snam gas transportation network.

The length of the pipeline in Greece is approximately 550 kilometres. TAP’s longest section, it will start at Kipoi, near the country’s border with Turkey, and finish at its border with Albania, south-west of Ieropigi.

The Greek section will include one compressor station near Kipoi for 10 bcm and an additional one near Serres should TAP’s capacity be upgraded to 20 bcm. There will be 23 block valve stations along the Greek route.
