4th Annual Hellenic Initiative Gala raises $2 million to support business and NGO programs in Greece

Under the theme “Empowering the Future of Greece,” The Hellenic Initiative led the Greek-American community in raising awareness — and investment capital — for Greece at the organization’s 4th annual gala, which raised 2 million USD in donations.

Funds raised by The Hellenic Initiative (THI) are invested in entrepreneurial programs in Greece and to support Greek NGOs that provide for underserved communities in Greece, particularly children. This year’s gala will honor outstanding individuals for their support of the Greek people.

The event’s keynote speaker was Admiral Jim Stavridis, USN (Ret.), former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO and Dean of the Fletcher School at Tufts University; Honorees are Action for Migration & Development and Together for Children; special recognition to ReGeneration, the largest private internship program for millennials in Greece, a joint program of The Coca-Cola Company and THI.

The event was Emceed by Chris Diamantopoulos, the Greek-American actor of HBO’s “Silicon Valley” and Disney’s Voice of Mickey Mouse, and took place at The Waldorf Astoria, 301 Park Avenue, New York, NY on Friday, Sept. 30.

Special guests of the event include Greek and US Summer Olympic medalists: Aikaterini Stefanidi (GRE) Gold Medal, Women’s Pole Vault; Eleftherios Petrounias (GRE) Gold Medal, Men’s Rings; Spyridon Gianniotis (GRE) Silver Medal, Men’s 10km Marathon Open Water Swimming; Helen Maroulis (USA) Gold Medal, Women’s freestyle Wrestling 53 kg.

THI has directly committed or granted $3.5 million to support crisis relief efforts and job creation, more than $6.2 million to fund entrepreneurship programs through the Hellenic Entrepreneurship Award, an initiative created, funded, and proudly supported by The Libra Group.

Founded in 2012, THI is a global, nonprofit, secular institution mobilizing the Greek Diaspora and Philhellene community to support sustainable economic recovery and renewal for the Greek people. THI’s programs address crisis relief through strong nonprofit organizations. THI also builds entrepreneurial skills in a new generation of business leaders.
