Manos Konsolas: Impossible to invest in large tourist development projects across 80% of Greece

Greek main opposition New Democracy Tourism Sector head Dodecanese MP Manos Konsolas stressed in a speech at the Greek Parliament that it is impossible to invest in tourist development projects throughout 80% of Greece and that the government remains hostile to investment and entrepreneurship.

Debating the bill on Spatial Planning and Sustainable Development in Greece, Mr. Konsolas Manos accused the leftist SYRIZA-ANEL government of trying to control the Special Land Use Plans, referring to Article 8 which the government sends another negative message to all those who want to invest in the tourism sector, especially through large and strategic investments.

Mr. Konsolas noted that this article seeks the stranglehold of the Ministry of Environment and Energy in any effort or investment activity.

It is envisaged that the Ministry of Environment for the Special Spatial Plans pre-approve all studies of a large strategic investment, and also that the Central Council of Urban Affairs and Disputes give its consent.

It therefore entangles investors in a perpetual tug, forcing them to do studies to spend money with uncertain outcome.

This way, it is certain that there will be significant delays and obstacles for the implementation of a major strategic investment in the tourism sector and beyond.”

“How can you expect to create investment climate and business climate under these conditions? “asked the Greek main opposition New Democracy Tourism Sector head.

He also announced that the top priority of New Democracy is configuring and activating a specific Spatial Plan for Tourism noting that it is currently impossible to invest in tourist development projects throughout 80% of Greece

Referring to this Spatial Plan for Tourism the Dodecanese MP  highlighted:

“A new Special Spatial Plan for tourism should be of a dynamic rather than a static nature.

It should respond to modern needs and exploit the comparative advantages of Greece at both national and regional levels.

It should not contain horizontal prohibitions but examine all cases separately.

It should promote new tourism products and attract large strategic investments in tourism, because these are the investments that will increase tourist revenue and attract tourists with high income.”
