A consortium made up of the U.S. firm Exxon Mobil, France’s Total and Greece’s Hellenic Petroleum on Wednesday officially applied for the offshore exploratory drilling rights for hydrocarbons in two blocks south of Crete. The application was filed by Environment and Energy Minister George Stathakis.
The ministry will now announce an international tender for the rights and expects to ratify the final outcome of this by the end of the year, so that seismic surveys can begin in early 2018. The area of interest has been decided on the basis of data collected in previous surveys, which the three companies have processed using the latest techniques.
