EYDAP chief: Water is a human right and cannot be commercialized

“Water is a human right, at the core of our values. It cannot be commercialised, regardless of the cost. Our intention is to safeguard the public character of the Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYDAP) and that the state retains 51 pct of the company. This will not change, ” EYDAP managing director Yannis Benissis argued in a meeting with journalists on Tuesday, according to ANA>

According to the data provided by EYDAP’s CEO, 10,000 households have been included in the social tariff, while outstanding debts to the company amount to more than 200 million euros in domestic and business bills. Furthermore, the debts of municipalities amount to 20-25 million euros, while the debt of 700 largest debtors amount to 15-20 million euros and include those of four municipalities (Megara, Fili, Salamina, Marathonas).
