Greek Shipping Minister Ioannis Plakiotakis met with Chairman of the Piraeus Port Authority’s (OLP) Board of Directors Υu Zeng Gang on Thursday, according to ANA.
The meeting comes a day after the Shipping ministry’s Port Planning and Development Committee greenlighted a new master plan submitted for the port by majority stakeholder COSCO (China Ocean Shipping Company Ltd), except for the two projects that had been added in early August to expand the car and container terminals.
Plakiotakis underlined his satisfaction with the fact that a particularly significant investment, after years of various obstacles, as he said, is now being implemented, opening a new page in the excellent China-Greece relations.
On Wednesday, OLP withdrew its plan to expand the car terminal into an area used for ship repairing at Neos Molos, in the Drapetsona district of Piraeus, after objections by local mayors and ship-related businesses in the area. Furthermore, the Committee members rejected the plan to expand the container terminal area to handle 10 million TEUS annually, from the 7.2 million currently, as being premature.
