COVID-19 pandemic accelerated Greece’s technological upgrade

Every cloud has a silver lining, and for Greece, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the country’s much-needed and long-overdue technological upgrade, ANA reports.

Bringing hundreds of e-services in a single portal in less than a year may sound overly ambitious, if not unrealistic, for a state ranking 26th out of the 27 EU Member States in the 2020 European Commission Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI).

A day before the first lockdown announced in March 2020 the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance launched, a government platform that allows citizens to access over 500 services, ranging from residence certificates to medical prescriptions.
The pace of Greece’s digital transformation may indeed be remarkable, but it has not been an opportunistic endeavor. New Democracy’s pre-election campaign pledged for an innovative, green, and digital economy as well as for a less expensive state through e-government.

The digital boom is expected to place Greek businesses and the government on firmer footing when dealing with the pandemic’s financial repercussions. Meanwhile, the 5G rollout has the potential to transform entire business domains and create an endless number of new ones in areas like medicine, transportation, supply chains, and education.
