The start of an extensive cycle of projects with a total budget of €13,920,000 was confirmed during a working meeting between Mayor Thodoris Tzoumas and the Regional Deputy Governor of Magnesia and Northern Sporades, Anna-Maria Padimitriou. The meeting presented a comprehensive plan of interventions aimed at securing Skiathos as a modern, smart, and sustainable tourist destination.
In his statement, the mayor expressed warm thanks to the deputy governor for her excellent cooperation and personal commitment, as well as to the services of the Thessaly Region. It was emphasized that the projects being implemented will upgrade infrastructure, improve residents’ quality of life, strengthen environmental protection, and create a stable foundation for a more sustainable and competitive tourism identity.
Infrastructure Upgrades with a Tourism Footprint
Most of the interventions fall under the strategy of integrated spatial investment and include key projects directly related to the visitor experience, such as:
- Installation of two reverse osmosis units to improve water quality
- Conversion of the old health center to house EPAL and EEEEK schools
- Energy upgrades of buildings
- Restoration of the Bourtsi building and Skiathos Castle
- Road surfacing on the provincial network Skiathos – Koukounaries
The total budget for these initiatives amounts to €11,800,000.
Flood Protection – Enhancing Destination Resilience
A €3,200,000 project for flood protection in Troulos, Achlades, Agia Paraskevi, and Koukounaries will start immediately, enhancing the readiness of an island with high tourist flows.
Sewerage Completion – Environmental Safety €2 Million
The sewerage project in Troulos and Koukounaries is nearing completion, which is critical for maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
Skiathos Towards a “Smart Island” – Presentation of Digital Tourism Applications
Meanwhile, at the recent Thessaly Region event titled “Life on a Smart Island”, attended by Deputy Governor Anna-Maria Padimitriou, the Municipality of Skiathos presented the digital ecosystem currently being implemented and the developments planned for the next two years.
Applications Already Operational:
- Digital tours in 9 languages at the Papadiamantis Museum and the Zisis Economou Museum
- Skiathos Trails app with QR code information and special consideration for people with reduced mobility
- Remote fire monitoring system in Koukounaries with cameras and drones
- Extra Milers app promoting accessible tourism
Applications to Launch in 2026:
- Experience Skiathos AR, an augmented reality tour program with original animation content
- Series of digital services for citizens and visitors, including:
Smart hazard warning and response system
Organization of traffic office and municipal fleet management
Childcare center management platform
Electronic document circulation and digital signatures
Electronic payment system
Smart accessibility system for people with mobility challenges
Water meter management platform
Finally, the new water measurement platform was presented, allowing consumers to:
- Submit replacement requests
- Check functionality
- Report malfunctions
- Monitor water consumption
