In Pyli, Trikala, a comprehensive upgrade of the tourism product is being planned with a horizon toward 2030, leveraging the areas comparative advantages: the natural landscape of Pindus, its cultural heritage, the MeteoraPyli Geopark, which belongs to the UNESCO network, and its position as a gateway from the Thessalian plain to the mountainous areas.
With a permanent population of 12,852 residents and an area of 747.7 km², Pyli is seeking ways to increase visitor numbers, extend the length of stay, and utilize thematic forms of tourism that meet the demand of the modern travel market.
Natural and cultural wealth as a driver of development
Pyli serves as the natural entrance to Pindus and offers a mosaic of landscapes with 87% mountainous terrain, rich forests, rivers, and gorges, as well as iconic monuments such as the Bridge of Agios Vissarion. The MeteoraPyli Geopark significantly enhances the areas international profile, highlighting its geological and natural value through networks of trails, environmental education activities, and geotourism programs.
The thematic experiences developed around nature, culture, gastronomy, and local products already attract travelers seeking authenticity, while the municipality aims to strengthen them to create a multi-layered four-season tourism product.
Infrastructure improvement and destination upgrade
A key priority in the municipal plan is upgrading infrastructure linked to nature activities and alternative tourism. Trail networks, the Pertouli Ski Center, climbing areas, equestrian centers, and specialized outdoor activity facilities form the foundation for year-round visitor attraction. At the same time, the operation of guesthouses, boutique accommodations, and traditional lodgings in mountain communities creates a hospitality profile that meets the demand for small, authentic units.
In 2025, 126 tourist accommodations were recorded, mostly concentrated along the PyliElatiPertouliNeraidochori axis, while overnight stays showed an upward trend, exceeding 31,000. Despite this positive trajectory, the average visitor stay remains low, at 2.24 days, which the municipality aims to increase through enriched tourism experiences.
Enrichment of the tourism product with thematic experiences
The area has a strong foundation for developing nature-based, cultural, winter, cycling, and gastronomic tourism. According to the Geopark survey, visitors show strong preference for hiking and mountaineering at 31%, skiing at 28%, and local gastronomy at 13%, providing clear direction for investment priorities.
In this context, the municipality is enhancing nature trails, upgrading viewpoints, creating digital content and experiences, promoting local products through branding, and supporting small businesses that connect tourism with local production.
Digital upgrade and modern promotion
A central goal is the full digital transformation of the destination, with a modern tourism website, mobile applications, digital guides, and a unified tourism branding identity. The Tourism Promotion Center, established in 2025, coordinates and produces content to ensure a consistent image and presence for the destination.
Goals by 2030
Pyli has set measurable targets defining the next five-year framework: increase visitor numbers by 20%, establish an average stay of 3 nights, create 1520 new tourism and agritourism businesses, and develop educational, environmental, and cultural initiatives to enrich the visitor experience.
The Municipality of Pyli aims to transform its natural and cultural wealth into a cohesive, sustainable, and competitive tourism product. Through targeted infrastructure interventions, the promotion of four-season experiences, support for local entrepreneurship, and a modern digital identity, it seeks to establish itself as a destination offering quality, authenticity, and connection with nature.
